Hello Kitty Cake (Fondant Cake #9)

I was so excited for this cake when my customer requested a Hello Kitty Cake. She also wanted animal prints so I decided to combine them both! :) I found an image online of Hello Kitty holding a cupcake so I thought this would be the perfect "Happy Birthday" Hello Kitty Cake :D I blew up the image on my laptop in microsoft word and printed two papers with half of Hello Kitty's head on one and her body on the other. I printed them out and taped them at the seams. Then I took some tissue paper and layed it on top of the image and traced with an edible food marker. I then took the tissue paper and placed it over some white rolled out fondant and re-traced the image onto the fondant. Then I piped the outline with royal icing! The cake was vanilla with a chocolate mousse filling. Happy Birthday Kari!

Rose Sugar Cookies

Instead of attempting to make another cake, I decided to spread my wings a bit and make some sugar cookies! These are an inspiration from Amber Spiegel's cookies. She's an amazing artist! Her blog is here: http://amberspiegel.blogspot.com/ Nothing like a nice sugary crunchy piece of art! I made these cookies using a regular roll-out sugar cookie recipe but I made a mistake and used powdered sugar instead of regular sugar. All this cake baking has tricked my mind into thinking powdered sugar is the regular....hah! I think that's why my dough came out a bit more sticky in consistency so I had to add more flour. All in all the cookies tasted great. My husband was a fan and so was my dad. I originally had 18 cookies but they slowly started disappearing before I could ice and paint them...I guess that's what you call a good-bad-thing haha! They tasted even better with the royal icing on top! I flooded the cookies with white royal icing and let them dry overnight. In the morning I handpainted some roses with food gels and clear vanilla extract. My mom said they were too pretty to eat :) Gotta love moms!
